Overcoming the Six Basic Fears of Entrepreneurship - Part 3by Lorne Peasland ![]() We read a lot about health, these days. Mental health, physical health, biophysical health, microbiophysical health...you name it. Did you know it's a fear, for many people? Although it's been claimed to be linked to physical and social heredity, it's mainly discomforting stories that we've been exposed to from childhood that create a deep fear of ill health in just about everyone, to some degree. What's that latest adult diapers commercial all about? Or how about the aspirin-a-day-keeps-the-heart-attack-away message all about? Does being eighty-two years old, from France, active and vibrant, a lover of wine and rich fatty foods, suggest anything? Selling health by keeping alive the fear of ill health is a primary strategy for businesses as diverse as drug manufacturing and travel. A reputable physician once estimated that 75% of all people who visit physicians for professional services suffer from Want to try an experiment? Before you consider this little trial, consider this: it may make an acquaintance uncomfortable, so it should not be carried too far. Get three acquaintances to join you in suggesting to a fourth acquaintance that he or she looks ill, or a bit under the weather, or that their speech or mannerisms have been a bit odd lately. You might be surprised at the results. Did you know that disappointments in business are one of the main causes of the fear of ill health? So how does an entrepreneur, who surely faces disappointments in business, cope with the fear of ill health? They use self-suggestion and prayer techniques to concentrate on the good things in life. They stay away from fads and 'isms recommended as "therapy." They don't talk to other people about their operations and accidents. They don't experiment with diets without professional advice. The entrepreneur who isn't afraid of ill health doesn't waste time thinking about disease. They do something to ensure they don't worry from it, and then they go about their business. And they don't find their "cure" in a bottle. If you fear ill health, you're prone to avoid exercise, which results in over-weight. Entrepreneurs like fresh air, like they like fresh challenges. They exercise, some more than others, but they recognize its value and chastise themselves if they find themselves shunning it for miniscule business excuses. Have you ever had someone do the "poor me" on you? We're all sympathetic creatures, or should that be pathetic? An And it deserves another mention, at the end. People who fear ill health also abuse alcohol and other substances. While they may think they aren't afraid of getting sick, they submit their bodies to the substances that lower its natural defenses in one way or another. Successful entrepreneurs know that.
